Spanish Abracadabra
Doesn’t gazing at the endless winter rain make you long to visit sunny Spain? You can do it without having to travel far – just book your seat at Pod Baranami Cinema! The 18th Spanish Cinema Week, the annual review of the best productions from the Iberian Peninsula, is held on 15-21 March.
We will see award-winning films reflecting the wealth of genres and themes of modern Spanish cinema. The programme features the dazzling black comedy The Bar by the extravagant director Álex de la Iglesia, Abracadabra nominated for the Goya Award in eight categories, directed by Pablo Berger, known to Polish audiences for his 2012 film Snow White. Amar by Esteban Crespo tells the story of a first love and the delights and disappointments it brings. While we’re on the subject of love, Pedro Aguilera’s Sister of Mine is the story of a forbidden erotic attraction between the protagonist and his step-sister. We will also see the second film of 2017 by Fernando Franco – Morir is the story of love in the face of the greatest challenge: facing the passing of one’s beloved. The review also features Can’t Say Goodbye – the moving debut by Lino Escalera.
We will also join Spanish conquistadors on a journey through the Amazonian rainforest in search of the mythical El Dorado; the historical superproduction Gold by Agustín Díaz Yanes is based on a Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s short story Oro. Finally, Giant (dir. Jon Garaño, Aitor Arregi) tells the true story of the world’s tallest man and his journey through 19th-century Europe. ¡Hasta luego! (Barbara Zajac, Karnet magazine)
