Mahler and Schumann? Alma and Clara, of course! This year’s Sinfonietta Festival under the banner Sinfonietta Is a Woman is dedicated to women of music: composers, instrumentalists, singers and muses. The celebration of chamber music organised by Sinfonietta Cracovia features songs by Alma Mahler performed by the mezzo-soprano Ulrike Helzel from the Vienna Opera, A Maiden’s Prayer – a huge hit at 19th-century salons by Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska, originally written for piano and adapted for various string ensembles – and two concerts starring Soyoung Yoon. The winner of the H. Wieniawski Violin Competition in 2011 appears alongside the Orion String Trio to perform works by Beethoven, Schubert and Dohnányi on 3 July; she returns for the festival finale with Bach’s Concerto in D minor for two violins, joined by Amelia Maszońska. The hugely popular clubbing with chamber music event returns , resounding with music by Grażyna Bacewicz, Louise Farrenc, Rebecca Clarke, Clara Schumann… The special guest of the event is the Lethiec Trio of the acclaimed French clarinettist Michel Lethiec and his daughters Saskia (violin) and Karine (viola). Festival concerts resound at the courtyards, rooms and gardens of the National Museum in Krakow (including Cracovia Hotel!). The only exception is Grigory Frid’s operatic monodrama Diary of Anne Frank (dir. Rebekah Rota): the performance by the soprano Ewa Majcherczyk is staged at the Museum of Municipal Engineering in Kazimierz. (Barbara Skowrońska)
