May Panorama

1 May 2016

Cultural May is fast approaching! The momentum of the sheer number and scale of artistic events in Kraków is not unlike going at supersonic speeds. But fear not, we will hear plenty of stirring music and attend many outstanding events: from the concert by Max Richter to the Film Music Festival (this year’s electrifying programme will gather over thirty thousand guests!), from Netia Off Camera to the Krakow Film Festival, from Museum Night to the Science Festival and the Copernicus Festival examining the concept of beauty. There are also numerous events at Tauron Arena Kraków and the ICE Kraków Congress Centre, welcome returns such as the Motion Trio with the AUKSO Orchestra, Kroke with Tomasz Stańko and Voo Voo with Trebunie-Tutki… All this and more makes this month’s cultural panorama especially thrilling. Meanwhile spring is in full swing, so there are plenty of important events beyond concert halls. From Constitution Day and the sixtieth (!) Singing Lesson at the Small Market Square to the Juvenalia Student Festival and the Family Festival on the Vistula Boulevards, Kraków reveals its beauty once again – and all this is just the prelude of events awaiting this summer! The Małopolska Days of Cultural Heritage focus on the region’s waterways – make sure you join in with the fun and discovery. After all, everything flows!

In this issue:

  • Adventure Time. The sheer volume and diversity of the 9th Film Music Festival can seem overwhelming. One thing is certain: between 24 and 30 May, there will be plenty of gems for everyone.
  • Breathtaking. Films breaking taboos, names from opening and closing credits, plenty of news and surprises… The 9th Netia Off Camera is fast approaching!
  • What Crisis? At the threshold of the 21st century, we are facing environmental, political, economic and social crises. Has humankind reached a critical point?
  • Delicious! A pinch of animations, a handful of cinematic portraits, mix in Polish, Swedish and New York tales, season with esoterica, and voilà! During the 56th Krakow Film Festival we have a cinematic feast ahead of us!
  • Palpable or Inconceivable? This year’s Copernicus Festival will be dedicated to beauty. Scholars from a wide range of disciplines will try to answer questions such as: what is beauty? What makes some things seem beautiful and others repulsive? And why do our opinions vary so much?
  • Discovery Night. If you like new challenges, the 13th Museum Night in Kraków is just for you! This year’s motto is: Discovering the Unknown.
  • Full Immersion. Fascinating places in our region, frequently not accessible to the public, and mesmerising histories with babbling brooks, flowing streams and fountains, tempting ponds and lakes, treacherous puddles, swamps and marshlands… The theme of the 18th Małopolska Days of Cultural Heritage will be the aphorism by Heraclitus of Ephesus “Everything flows”.
