On the first Thursday of December, Cracovian nativity scene makers once again gathered at the foot of the statue of Adam Mickiewicz to take part in the 81st competition. Their creations are now on display at the Krzysztofory Palace until late February. The beautiful tradition has been preserved by the Museum of Krakow for several decades, and the institution has been joined by the City of Kraków and KBF to once again showcase nativity scenes in the city space. Shopfronts, windows of hotels, restaurants and shopping malls and freestanding, illuminated cases proudly present a total of almost 40 fairytale constructions, including popular favourites and brand-new nativity scenes.

Cracovian nativity scene makers reach for inspiration to Kraków’s historic buildings and monuments, and freely intertwine styles, themes and figures from different worlds. The latter feature numerous musicians, from angels playing violins and trumpets to Cracovian buskers. That’s why the route of this year’s All Around Nativity Scenes walk follows a wide range of Kraków’s musical motifs. As we wander around the Old Town (from above, its layout recalls the shape of a lute) and its surroundings, we will hear classical sounds, street songs, sung poetry, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll. Keep your eyes peeled and look out for Cracovian composers, performers, musicians and buskers inside the nativity scenes – which you'll find using our handy map.

Traditionally, on Epiphany (6 January), we will be taken on the musical route All Around Nativity Scenes by Michał Niezabitowski, director of the Museum of Krakow
