A singular artist, creator of emotion-laden, visionary works arising in response to his experience of the contemporary world and recalling European painting traditions, master of light, outstanding colourist and author of unusual black compositions… The exhibition at the Gallery of the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre reveals different aspects of this Cracovian artist.
Grzegorz Stec creates works between abstraction and figuration, emotion and intellect, spontaneous gestures and technical perfection. He frequently paints crowds comprising meaningless individuals – parades and carnivals, throngs of people and battles, minor and major apocalypses, in which individuals appear as heads or masks. According to the curator Joanna Gościej-Lewińska, the artist’s works are not just “a confession of his own disquiet, longing, doubts, obsessions and torment”, a coming to terms with his own self and the world, but also “a search for that which is most important: another person”. The retrospective of Stec’s works at the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre poses questions on the order of the world, on our human condition and on the sense of passing.
