The exhibition at the brand-new  Museum of Nowa Huta focuses on present-day residents of Kraków’s post-industrial district, founded seventy years ago as the living quarters for the steelworks plant workers and an ideal socialist city. However, the 20th century history took many twists and turns, and the period of the struggle for freedom and the social and political transformations of the latter part of the century left their indelible mark on the district. The creation of a local authority, foundations of free media, privatisation of the former Vladimir Lenin Steelworks, local community engagement in events such as the finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, social enterprises such as art therapy sessions hosted at Ludowy Theatre, flourishing free trade and ongoing changes to the architectural landscape are all important elements shaping the present-day atmosphere of Kraków’s northeast district. The exhibition scenario was developed following extensive consultation with local residents.
