Huge sounds and enormous sizes: we encounter the king of instruments during the 27th International Summer Organ Concerts Festival at Kraków’s churches (18 June – 20 July). The main strength of the event lies in the masterful performances and the diversity of the repertoire, reaching beyond the canon of “obvious” compositions by Bach, Buxtehude, Vierne or Messiaen. During the festival opening (18 June), Jan Van Mol recalls works by Jan Křtitel Kuchař, one of the performers during the Prague premiere of The Marriage of Figaro. On 22 June, Ines Maidre performs works by the contemporary Norwegian composer Reidar Sløgedal. Jan Pieter Lanooy reaches for the 16th-century Tablature by Jan of Lublin (26 June), while Liudmila Matsyura performs Kyrie by Lani Smith, the American composer of sacral music who passed away a few years ago (29 June). In July, Kristel Aer performs Dialogue by Ester Mägi, the First Lady of Estonian Music (13 July), while Grazia Salvatori recalls Girolamo Frescobaldi’s Fiori Musicali (20 July). The programme of the festival will be rounded off by recitals by two Polish artists: Łukasz Mandola (9 July) and Dariusz Bąkowski-Kois (16 July). (Barbara Skowrońska)
