Contemporary Hungary

Can Mozart’s music sketches be developed and interpreted for an unconventional instrument, perhaps cymbals? How do you translate absurdist theatre into a chamber opera? How much is left of the original folk after songs arranged for piano are adapted for big band? You probably never entertained such thoughts, but – luckily for us! – artists from the Budapest Music Centre have. We will hear the results at the Małopolska Garden of Arts during the Festival of Contemporary Hungarian Music (8-10 June).

The event opens with a performance by one of Europe’s leading contemporary music ensembles UMZE under the baton of Zoltán Rácz. Working with soloists (including the cymbal virtuoso Miklós Lukács), the artists present music by 20th and 21st-century composers such as György Ligeti, György Kurtág and Péter Eötvös. On 9 June, three singers, three instrumentalists and the conductor perform the opera 123 – one of three performances of the international project Out At S.E.A. (Someone Eats All) inspired by Sławomir Mrożek’s drama At Sea. The final evening is centred round experimental jazz and folk. Modern Art Orchestra under the baton of Kornél Fekete-Kovács performs Béla Bartók’s 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs arranged for big band.
