Poland’s finest flautist Łukasz Długosz performs alongside the Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra under the baton of Jerzy Maksymiuk. Our hands are practically starting to clap by themselves! But we must stop ourselves: the concert held at MOCAK on 11 May forms a part of the Music Without Applause cycle. The meeting bears the title Warsaw Autumn in Spring in Kraków, since the programme features works which are performed – often for the first time ever – at the festival in the capital. We will hear Jerzy Kornowicz’s Concerto for two flutes (Łukasz Długosz is joined by his wife Agata), Zygmunt Krauze’s Stone Music performed by Piotr Banasik by hitting piano strings with stoned and metal rods, Tomasz Sikorski’s Strings in Earth for 15 string instruments, and compositions by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Eugeniusz Knapik and Jerzy Maksymiuk.
Let’s remember that the conductor has been linked with the Warsaw Autumn for decades as a performer and member of the festival’s programme committee. There are quite a few of these Warsovian and autumnal ties – perhaps deliberately? Is Sinfonietta Cracovia about to make a debut at one of Poland’s contemporary music festivals? Only time will tell, so for now go, listen, enjoy, and don’t forget to not clap! (Barbara Skowrońska)
