"Marie Curie" competing for the Golden Frog

27 October 2016

On the 12th of November, the 24th edition of the CAMERIMAGE International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography will start in Bydgoszcz. The highlight of the event is the Main Competition. This year, 13 films from around the world will compete for the Golden Frog, including Krakow Festival Office's co-production – Marie Curie, the story of the Polish Nobelist, directed by Marie Noëlle, with cinematography by Michał Englert.

Marie Curie is the story of an extraordinary woman who leaves her homeland and goes to France to start her scientific career. It is a unique journey in time to the turn of the century Paris – the city of intrigue, romance, art and discoveries that changed the world. Karolina Gruszka stars in the title role. She is accompanied by eminent Polish actors, including Izabela Kuna as Bronisława Skłodowska – the Nobel Prize winner’s sister, Piotr Głowacki as Albert Einstein, and Daniel Olbrychski as Emile Amagat – Madam Curie’s staunch opponent.

The costume drama Marie Curie is an international co-production (Poland/Germany/France/Belgium) and the winner of the 7th edition of the Competition for Film Production Promotion organised by the Regional Film Fund in Krakow. The film premiered during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, in the elite “Contemporary World Cinema” section. It will be released in Polish cinemas in February 2017.

Competing for the Golden Frog at the 24th CAMERIMAGE will be 13 world productions. In addition to Marie Noëlle’s Marie Curie, the Main Competition also features Andrzej Wajda’s last film, Afterimages.

The Main Competition for the Golden Frog has been the most important point of the festival since its beginnings – the first edition of the event in 1993. Its aim is to present feature films in which the motion picture plays a significant role in retelling history. The visual value of these films is the result of the creative collaboration of the director and cinematographer, and the unique sensitivity of the filmmaker. The competition draws attention to the enormous contribution the cinematographer brings into a film. The selection of the best cinematographers is made by an international jury.

The CAMERIMAGE International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography is the largest and most recognised festival dedicated to the art of cinematographers. Apart from the Main Competition and other competitions respected in the industry, the event also includes special screenings, premieres, cinema reviews and retrospectives, as well as meetings. CAMERIMAGE is also an excellent forum not only for presentations but also for discussions about the future of the art of filmmaking.

The producer of Marie Curie is Posktromski-Studio – a company that has European co-productions to its name, such as the Polish-German project Winter Daughter (2011). The film was co-produced by P’Artisan Filmproduktion (Germany) and Sepia Production (France). The production was shot in Łódź, Krakow and Łeba (Poland), Paris, Brussels and Munich. The project was subsidised by the Polish Film Institute, the Regional Film Fund of Krakow, the Krakow Festival Office and EC1 Łódź – the City of Culture in Łódź. The Krakow Film Commission provided support for the production.
