All This June

1 June 2016

The time is almost here when events of the Krakow Film Festival turn smoothly into meetings of the Miłosz Festival, and concerts of the Wianki festival spanning the entire city into events of the Jewish Culture Festival. Traditional June? From the Dragon Parade, via the enthronement of the Fowler King and the prancing Lajkonik to St John’s Fair on the Vistula Boulevards. More outdoor events? From the Boulev(Art) at the Nowa Huta Reservoir to the Salt Festival in Wieliczka. How about concerts? ICE Jazz with Adam Bałdych, Roby Lakatos and Pat Metheny, the first instalments of the Summer Jazz Festival and Zaz at Tauron Arena Kraków. And classical music? The Theatrum Musicum project is starting, as is the Kraków Opera Summer Festival. Exhibitions? Photomonth Festival and Krakow Photo Fringe are still going, the International Print Triennial is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the National Museum is opening a great presentation as part of July’s World Youth Day: “Maria. Mater Misericordiae”. And let’s not forget kids – after all this exciting month starts with their very own celebration! This long countdown doesn’t come close to describing all the fascinating events in June. There’s no point in talking about a “panorama” or a “full picture” – you simply need to step outside, participate, take it all into your heart and your head, and enjoy the long sunny days and warm evenings. Summer is almost here!

In this issue:

  • Magical Music. Recalling the traditions of St John’s Night, once again Wianki is the city’s Fête de la Musique.
  • Golden Age. We’ll be taken back in to the Renaissance, to the golden age of the late Jagiellonian dynasty with this year’s St John’s Fair. Held between 24 and 26 June, the event will be dedicated to the reigns of kings Sigismund the Old and Sigismund August.
  • A Dog’s Life. As if it’s not enough that it’s upped its tempo and now returns to Kraków every year, it’s also swapped May for June. What kind of vagrant is this? The Miłosz Festival!
  • On the Strings of Imagination. This month, the walls of ICE Kraków will shake to syncopated beats. On 26 June, Pat Metheny presents his latest project.
  • Remembering Zion. The Diaspora and the Sabbath are the leading themes of this year’s Jewish Culture Festival. For the 26th time, the event becomes a bridge connecting different nations, traditions and hearts – after all, we are all constant exiles of this world.
  • Photography vs. Crisis. Crisis? What crisis? Krakow Photomonth Festival 2016 encourages us to ponder questions which have been bothering us all.
  • Cinematic Olympiad. Olympic rivalries, difficult family relationships, exorcisms and paranormal activities… During the 56th Krakow Film Festival we will experience a cornucopia of topics and witness sportsman-like competition!
  • Universal Language. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, the International Print Triennial Society is recalling some of the finest moments of the event’s history.
