The world premiere of Otello at La Scala in Milan in 1887 marked Giuseppe Verdi’s spectacular return after 16 years away from the stage. Even though audiences were convinced that the 74-year-old composer had decided to rest on his laurels following the great success of Aida in 1871, he surprised them with his latest original, bold, innovative opera. Verdi’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Otello abounds with emotions – passionate love, obsessive jealousy, a desire for power and a fixation on revenge – all of which follow the dramatic overture.
The tale of the passion of the Moorish general, Desdemona’s futile attempts to prove her innocence and Iago’s plot to destroy Otello is presented by the Kraków Opera, with Tomasz Tokarczyk directing the music and Laco Adamik providing direction.
