The winner of the Grand Prix of the 62nd World Press Photo contest is the American photoreporter John Moore, who captured his winning image on 12 June 2018 in Texas during a crackdown by border police. The photo shows a crying toddler as she and her mother, an immigrant from Honduras, are taken into custody.
We will see the best image of 2018 and other projects awarded during the most recent competition on 7 February at the Gallery of the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre. Images of the world captured in photographers’ lenses frequently stir fear and disquiet. The history of Photo of 2018 also brings questions on the power of images. The publication of Moore’s photo was quickly followed by false rumours that the little girl was separated from her mother at the border between the US and Mexico. However, the fact remains that many families were separated, and little Yanela Sanchez (pictured on the cover of “Time” magazine being looked down on by Donald Trump) became a symbol and contributed to the practice of separating children from their parents being abandoned.
