Horizons of the Imagination

Pod Baranami Cinema welcomes fans of independent cinema once again! During the 19th IFF New Horizons Tour (10-15 January) we will see unusual productions screened last year at the prestigious Wrocław-base festival, including works by up-and-coming directors and internationally acclaimed filmmakers. The latter include the Icelandic production A White, White Day directed by Hlynur Pálmason: a mature, formally cool film brimming with supressed emotions, telling the story of a widower (portrayed by Ingvar E. Sigurðsson) struggling to come to terms with his grief and seemingly trapped in the past.

We will also see the Italian sensation of the Cannes festival. Tommaso is a surprising, moving, personal film by Abel Ferrara, with Willem Dafoe starring as an artist and the director’s alter ego. Fire Will Come (dir. Oliver Laxe), set in Spanish Galicia, explores the need for balance in nature and in an insular local community in a harsh, rural environment lashed by the elements.

Markus Schleinzer’s latest film Angelo captures the mentality of 18th-century Europe, on the surface captivated by science, art and progress while turning a blind eye on slavery and racism. The titular African slave Angelo Soliman – a famous historical, almost legendary figure – rises and falls through the ranks of Viennese high society, and suffers the ultimate humiliation after his death, when his body was ordered to be stuffed and displayed alongside other exotic specimens. Albert Serra also examines the Renaissance with his Liberté, awarded the special prize at Cannes and exploring the illusive charm of libertinism, sexual liberation and transgression which swept through French society at the threshold of the Revolution.

Last but not least is the ostentatiously-old school debut by Mark Jenkin. Filmed with a traditional 16mm camera, Bait tells the story of contemporary class conflict in a windswept seaside Cornish village. More details on the festival programme on www.kinopodbaranami.pl.
