The Bethlehem manger depicted in striking sceneries of Gothic and Renaissance buildings, the Three Wise Men with the Wawel Dragon and Lajkonik, figurines in traditional costumes and heroes of Polish history… Cracovian nativity scenes are unique on the global scale – last year they were added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. So what can we expect this year? We will find out on the first Thursday of December during the 77th Kraków Nativity Scene Contest. The review of works starts at 10am at the Adam Mickiewicz statue and closes with a parade around the Main Market Square. The scenes are assessed by a jury selecting winners in several categories. The results will be revealed at 2pm on 8 December at the Krzysztofory Palace, after which the participants walk to Celestat where the nativity scene at Strzelecki Park will be illuminated at 4pm. The venue also hosts the opening of the post-contest exhibition, held under the honorary patronage of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO. (dd)
