Jan Hrynkowski. The Artist’s Story

Jan Hrynkowski (1891-1971) – artist, printmaker and stage designer – studied in Kraków and Paris, took part in the 1st Exhibition of Polish Expressionists in 1917 and during the interwar years became one of the most important figures in Kraków’s artistic circles. After the war he was involved with the Stary Theatre in Kraków and the Śląski Theatre in Katowice.

The exhibition at the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow presents works by the co-creator of the Polish avantgarde alongside important artistic phenomena of the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition was inspired by Hrynkowski’s own collection of artworks and archive items. Oil paintings and prints from various stages in the artist’s life are shown alongside works by authors he valued, including his teachers, friends and colleagues. Together with documents, photographs and texts dedicated to the first avant-garde movement in Poland – Polish Expressionists (later Formists) – they tell the story of the artist’s life and era. (dd)
