The Joy of Curiosity

Do you love exploring? Experimenting? Hiking? Travelling? Well, we have great news: head to the celebration of the mountains and people who are united in their curiosity in the world and drive to push boundaries.

The 17th Krakow Mountain Festival (5-8 December) is the perfect opportunity to meet some of the world’s greatest climbers and watch films showcasing the beauty of extreme sports. The festival has been going from strength to strength, and this year it steps beyond the walls of the University of Economics and Kijów Cinema for the first time for screenings at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre. Guests include the crème de la crème of mountaineers, alpinists and climbers, including the British expert in big wall, solo and winter climbing Andy Kirkpatrick. Anna Stöhr shows that sports climbing isn’t just a man’s world, while Jim Herrington describes his great passions: mountaineering and photography.

The festival centres around film screenings, with over twenty productions competing for the Grand Prix in the International Film Festival. They include A Day at the Office by the charismatic Belgian climber and producer Sean Villaneuva O’Driscoll, 83° Ski the North (dir. Matthias Mayr) about the expedition to the Challenger Mountains (the most northern slopes of our planet), and the latest film by the Alastair Lee Spectre Expedition – To the End of the Earth about Leo Houlding’s journey to the far-flung reaches of the Antarctic. The Polish competition features acclaimed documentaries including Michał Bielawski’s Wind. Documentary Thriller, Dariusz Załuski’s The Last Mountain and Marcin Polar’s The Tough.

And of course there will be numerous workshops, training courses and a fair of books, equipment and outdoor kit. For more details on the festival programme, go to www.kfg.pl.
