Open again from 19 May!

On 6 November 1939, the Nazis rounded up well over a hundred professors at the Jagiellonian University’s Collegium Novum. The majority were transported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp as part of the campaign to eliminate all intellectual and moral authority in Poland with the overall aim to enslave the nation. The event which has passed down in history as Sonderaktion Krakau is one of the topics of MOCAK’s exhibition World War II – Drama, Symbol, Trauma.

We will examine some of the most important aspects of the war in Poland through the prism of works by 39 contemporary artists of all ages. The section Signals of War recalls how frequently we pretend to not see what’s under our very eyes. The Anti-Semitism section shows Nazi banners and slogans feeding anti-Jewish sentiments. The other topics, Life in the Ghettoes, Warsaw Uprising, The Holocaust and The Artist as a Witness to the Drama, document experiences which are impossible to express in words. The artworks will be accompanied by archival documents and literary and propaganda materials. (Dorota Dziunikowska, “Karnet” monthly)
