Icon of Jazz
“You can play a shoestring if you’re sincere” said one of the greatest jazzmen of all time, who brought the genre out of smoky underground clubs in Chicago and turned it into a highly-regarded artform. The iconic jazz saxophonist John Coltrane would be celebrating his 93rd birthday on 23 September. Pod Baranami Cinema marks the day by presenting a special screening of John Scheinfeld’s film Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary – a complex story of the artist’s life and passion for his music which smashed through the boundaries of race, religion, age and geographical location, as well as his search for faith. Coltrane only ever gave radio and press interviews and never spoke in front of TV cameras; in the documentary, his interviews are brought to life with readings by Denzel Washington.
