Sounds After Dark

Atmospheric dusk, a cool breeze, a hum of conversation in the background, a peaceful mind – can you imagine a more perfect way of listening to music? In 2007, the programme of Cracovian Nights was expanded to include Jazz Night. This year we explore different facets of the genre for the 13th time: on the evening of 13 July, we have a choice of 22 concerts at 18 venues throughout the city.

The largest stage at the Small Market Square comes to life with the Big Band Małopolski joined by the Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, Ida Nielsen Band from Denmark and selected compositions from Nahorny’s Songbook. Music starts in late afternoon at Bonarka shopping centre, hosting Wojciech Marcinowski’s Hot Swing Band and students from the Swing & Sway dance school. Studio S5 of Radio Kraków welcomes an ensemble with roots dating back to 1963: musicians forming the core of The Lessers (Antoni Krupa, Marian Pawlik and Benedykt Radecki) joined by friends. Additionally, winners of the Jazz Juniors festival perform during Jazz Night for the first time. The MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art welcomes violinist Amalia Obrębowska and her quartet; the artist seeks inspiration from many genres, including jazz, funk, soul and rock. Grammy Award-winning Włodek Pawlik and his son Łukasz give a piano recital at the Gallery of 19th-century Polish Art in the Cloth Hall. The summer stage of the Łaźnia Nowa Theatre presents Max Klezmer Band with ethno music and the trio of the British guitarist Keith Thompson as part of Boulev[art].

Later in the evening we move to clubs and cafés throughout Kraków to listen to acclaimed Polish musicians as well as guests from Slovakia, Italy, Spain and Cuba. Detailed programme on the official page. Entry to all events free! (Bartosz Suchecki, ”Karnet”)
