The Museum of Krak0w celebrated its 120th birthday on 31 May 2019. Anniversary events are held throughout the year, centring around the flagship cycle presenting portraits of residents of various districts in the city. The protagonists of the June instalment are Podgórze Dwellers, living in a postindustrial quarter on the right bank of today’s Kraków. Who are the people who live in this rapidly changing district today? The city built by Austrians at the foot of the Krzemionki quarry in the 19th century is no longer, and the famous post-war factories which collapsed in the wake of the political and economic changes of 1989 are long gone. They have been replaced by apartment blocks, shopping malls and offices attracting new residents. The exhibition at the Podgórze Museum recalls the former atmosphere of the district and presents labourers from the old factories on equal footing with contemporary office workers.
