It all started with a miracle: a princess who threw her engagement ring into a salt mine in Hungary found it in the first lump of salt excavated from Wieliczka – the legend explains how “white gold” first arrived in Małopolska… But how did it become the most important seasoning in the world? We will search for answers on 9 June during the Salt Festival at the Saltworks Museum and the courtyard and gardens of the Saltworks Castle. This year’s motto is “Salt in the Kitchen”, and there will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about sodium chloride and its uses in local and global gastronomy. Visitors to the outdoor museum events have a choice of a wide range of attraction on culinary and other themes: an exhibition of salt cellars, craft demonstrations and educational events. We will also hear concerts by the Wieliczka Salt Mine Brass Band and the song-and-dance ensemble Słowiany, and admire a magic show by Michał Kulik. (Anna Mazur)
