Light and dark
Depression and suicidal ideation are difficult topics, rarely touched upon by even the most hard-hitting hip-hop lyrics. If you add allegations of Satanism, you would be forgiven for thinking that $uicideboy$ are forced into the sidelines of popular music. Yet you’d be wrong: the debut album by the New Orleans duo reached number nine on the Billboard 200. The word “debut” is misleading in itself – Aristos Petrou and Scott Arceneaux Jr. have recorded over 40 EPs since 2014 under myriad guises. The exuberance is less surprising when you find out how the cousins approach recording. “It’s a way of connecting. Therapy through music,” they explain. We will hear the resulting blend of glitch with trap at Studio on 18 July. (Bartosz Suchecki, ”Karnet”)
