Born in 1938 in Istanbul and living and working in Paris since the 1960s, the Armenian artist Sarkis creates conceptual installations bringing new contexts, dimensions and meaning to famous artworks. He does so while straying away from simplistic publicity and direct references to the everyday while always paying close attention to the specific character of where he displays – or more precisely constructs – his works.
The artist has been invited to Kraków by Cricoteka, where he in turn “invites” excerpts from the body of work of Tadeusz Kantor to his presentation. The result is the exhibition Invitation, bringing together two artistic personalities with the aim to rediscover the heritage of the Cricot 2 Theatre, usually hidden away in storage and archives.
