The Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, held in Warsaw, traditionally kicks off in Kraków, opening with an annual exhibition at the Jagiellonian Library. Coinciding with the Year of Moniuszko, this year’s exhibition is titled Beethoven and Romantic Song. As well as presenting manuscripts from the Prussian National Library (including numerous songs by German and Austrian masters), we will see music penned by Polish composers such as Karol Szymanowski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski and of course Stanisław Moniuszko himself.
During evening concerts at the Gallery of 19th-century Polish Art in Sukiennice, held on 1, 2 and 3 April, we will hear a selection of nine string quartets by the master from Bonn presented by the acclaimed Shanghai Quartet. The concert held at the Kraków Philharmonic on 12 April, also forming a part of the Warsaw programme of the festival, features works by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák and Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder song cycle performed by Anna Gabler and directed by Charles Olivieri-Munroe.
