The cantata Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht BWV 211, also known as the Coffee Cantata, was first performed in 1734 at the legendary Café Zimmermann. Two hundred and eighty five years later, the piece inaugurates the 24th Bach Days (24-31 March), transporting us briefly from Kraków to 18th-century Leipzig. During this year’s event, organised by the Academy of Music, we will hear cantata arias interpreted by Piotr Windak (tenor), transcriptions for violin compositions with soloist Zbigniew Pilch, and transcriptions of organ sonatas and chorales performed by Katarzyna Czubek (recorder, Baroque oboe) and Adam Jastrzębski (harpsichord). The American harpsichordist Mitzi Meyerson, populariser of little known pieces for the instrument, performs a recital. Bach Days close with works by the younger generation of the family: Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Christian and Johann Christoph Friedrich. All concerts are held at Aula Florianka.
