The 19th Spanish Cinema Week, the annual review of the best productions from the Iberian Peninsula, is held on 14-21 March. Pod Baranami Cinema presents award-winning films reflecting the wealth of genres and themes of modern Spanish cinema, including Arantxa Echevarría’s Carmen & Lola. The love story set in the Roma community in Madrid took the Cannes Film Festival by storm and received several Goya 2018 awards. The programme also includes Javier Fesser’s comedy-drama Champions; selected as the Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, the film explores important issues of disability and exclusion and it was the highest-grossing Spanish language film of last year. We will also see the blockbuster of Spanish cinema Superlópez (dir. Javier Ruiz Caldera), based on the comic strip of the same name parodying Superman since 1973. In Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s latest film The Realm, the outstanding Antonio de la Torre stars as an influential politician who stands up to the existing party system.
