The film received seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. It was also awarded seven BAFTAs, three Golden Globes and myriad other major awards. Today it is widely regarded as a cinematic classic, and in 2007 the American Film Institute placed it eighth on its 100 Years...100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) list. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most important films in the history of cinema: Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. We can watch it again at Mikro Cinema on 27 January, the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Although Oskar Schindler’s story and the way it has been depicted in the film have stirred controversy, the Hollywood film has undoubtedly contributed to revealing the atrocities committed on Europe’s Jewish community during the Second World War to audiences the world over. Based on Thomas Keneally’s novel Schindler’s Ark, the film portrays the German industrialist who saved the lives of 1200 Jews with Liam Neeson in the starring role, joined by Ralph Fiennes as the brutal SS officer Amon Göth and Ben Kingsley as Schindler’s Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern, supported by Polish actors including Andrzej Seweryn, Anna Mucha and Piotr Polk.
