Doyenne of Jazz
“When you’re a jazz pianist, you’re not just suddenly handed a record deal. You have to wash and dry your fair share of dishes first,” she said in an interview. And they aren’t empty words – she spent twenty years performing in bars and hotels. Diana Krall started playing professionally in her native Canada when she was just 15 years old, and continued working hard as a student in the US and during holidays in Europe. And her persistence paid off: her album When I Look in Your Eyes was hailed by critics, earned her industry acclaim and became hugely popular among jazz fans and beyond. She herself says she wasn’t born to write songs, yet she captivates hearts of music lovers with her flair for expressing herself through music and lyrics penned by others. She is equally at home interpreting classic songs of the first half of the 20th century composed by masters such as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter as contemporary musicians such as Tom Waits and Paul McCartney. The Canadian artist visits Małopolska as part of a tour marking twenty years since the release of her breakthrough album: she presents a wide selection of her repertoire including hit covers and her own compositions at Tauron Arena Kraków on 28 June.
