Opera is built on paradoxes, therefore it is no wonder that the prologue of the Opera Rara Festival 2019 takes place in 2018 as Opera Rara Edu. We will hear a Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder, a cycle of songs, already known to the festival audience. This time it resounds in an intimate, chamber version – with a piano accompaniment. Thje second concert will bring a recital for two violas da gamba and a harpsichord with works of two most-famous gambists in the history of music: Marin Marais (the master) and Saint-Colombe’a (his student). What they have in common with singing and opera? Well, the viola da gamba masters made sure that their instrument “sang” with the flexibility and ease of human voice. It’s no surprise that on of Marais’ works is titled Les voix humaines.
