Legend of Polish composition, internationally acclaimed composer and conductor, winner of countless prizes and distinctions… Krzysztof Penderecki and his work has made an immeasurable impact on Polish and global culture, so it’s no wonder that the celebrations of his 85th birthday have stretched for an entire year, especially in Kraków – the composer’s home in professional and private spheres. Cracovian celebrations culminate with the gala Kraków for Maestro with the composer himself making a guest appearance. The grand concert at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre (24 November) features Walter Auer, first flautist of the Viennese Philharmonic, Daniel Ottensamer, the orchestra’s first clarinettist, and the acclaimed trumpeter Gábor Boldoczki. The guests are accompanied by Sinfonietta Cracovia under the baton of Jurek Dybał. We will hear a selection of Penderecki’s compositions, including virtuoso flute and clarinet concertos, the poetic Sinfonietta No. 3 “Pages of an Unwritten Diary”, and excerpts from Ubu King.
