Stunning landscapes, rousing music and excellent cinema: Kino Agrafka and the Irish Cultural Foundation host the Irish Film Festival (5-7 October). Nominated for the Golden Globe in 2017, Sing Street by John Carney – author of hits such as On the Edge, Once and Begin Again – transports us to bustling Dublin of the 1980s. The Oscar-nominated animation Song of the Sea featuring the unforgettable soundtrack by Kila takes us deep under the sea to the world of selkies – mythological beings who change from seal to human form by shedding their skin. The programme also features Darren Thornton’s A Date for Mad Mary and John Butler’s Handsome Devil, both awarded the Irish Film and Television Awards, Gerard Walsh’s road movie with musical touches South and Len Collin’s unusual rom com Sanctuary. Maurice Fitzpatrick’s documentary In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America introduces the Nobel Peace Prize winner and one of the most notable politicians in the history of Northern Ireland, while the cycle of short documentaries After 16 is dedicated to the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916.
