Pod Baranami Cinema presents the Conrad Festival film stream (22-28 October), featuring screenings accompanied by presentations by selected festival guests.

Film critic Anita Piotrowska takes us into the cinematic world of Ruben Östlund and his dark comedy The Square awarded the Palm d’Or, while the festival’s artistic director Michał Paweł Markowski presents Radu Jude’s Scarred Hearts based on the autobiographical novel by the Jewish-Romanian author Max Blecher and awarded the Golden Leopard at Locarno in 2016.

Commemorating the centenary of the birth of Ingmar Bergman, the organisers are hosting a film marathon Bergman by Night, introduced by the Slovenian philosopher, psychoanalyst and film critic Mladen Dolar. The programme includes Bergman’s cinematic adaptation of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, one of the director’s earliest films Summer with Monika based on Per Anders Fogelström’s novel, and Persona starring Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson. We will also see Ullmann in Saraband, a follow-up to the 1970s TV series Scenes from a Marriage. The event is introduced by the author, translator and Scandinavian scholar Jan Balbierz.

The festival also presents Jane Magnusson’s documentary Bergman. A Year in a Life, premiered during this year’s Cannes festival. The screening of the documentary will be preceded by a meeting with Thomas Sjöberg, author of the book Ingmar Bergman. Love, Sex, and Betrayal. The programme also includes Marcel Łoziński’s documentary Jak to się robi, taking a peek behind the scenes of political spin. Jakub Kornhauser talks About Cinematic Poems to Darek Foks, author of anthologies of Polish film poetry, and the writer Bronka Nowicka. Finally, there are screenings of film adaptations of Pompik the Bison based on children’s books by Tomasz Samojlik. (Barbara Zajac, Karnet magazine)
