Positive Energy in a Void
“Pannonica – not music but fire!” is the motto of the event bringing together lovers of ethno and Balkan music at Barcice near Stary Sącz between 30 August and 1 September. The picturesque setting of the Poprad Landscape Park is the perfect location for absorbing sounds – and of course the Pannonica Folk Festival is much more than the sum of its individual concerts.
Barcice were once on the trail of historical migrations of peoples from south Europe heading north. These days, every year the secluded village turns into a cultural capital of the Sądecczyzna region.
The sixth festival of Balkan culture welcomes Fanfara Transilvania, Marko Marković Brass Band, the BGKO Barcelona Gypsy BalKan Orchestra and Kraków’s favourites Kroke, performing alongside the acclaimed Bulgarian singer Neli Andreeva for the first time. But, as the festival organisers stress, it’s not the famous guests who make the event so great, but the positive energy of its participants.
You don’t come for a single gig – you come for three days of concerts with the festival village at the centre. Campers and their families have plenty of workshops, performances and demonstrations to choose from, all under the banner of slow life, slow food and respect for nature.
Pannonica has also earned the Remarkable Festival award from the Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe (EFFE) for its high artistic level and contribution to international culture. It’s certainly a must-see event for all fans of Balkan sounds! And it’s a perfect break from the hustle and bustle of city life. (bsu)
