Held between 3 and 6 July, the 11th Musical Barbican Festival has a fascinating programme with a venue to match! The Cracow Guitar Quartet paints Musical Landscapes with colours courtesy of Boccherini’s Baroque Fandango, Machado’s Brazilian Dances, Brouwer’s Cuban Landscape with Rain and Mussorgsky’s Night on a Bare Mountain. Anna Miernik presents piano masterpieces by Polish composers Chopin, Paderewski, Szymanowski and Nowowiejski. In The World’s Kaleidoscope – from Borodin to Piazzolla we will hear Maxim Salnikov on accordion and bandoneon with the Russian Camerata Orchestra under the baton of Andrei Kruzhkov. The finale features virtuosos of glass harp: the fascinating GlassDuo perform the suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake, Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 7 and Sting’s Fragile, all on an instrument made of… drinking glasses. The pair of musicians are accompanied by Russian Camerata under the baton of Piotr Sułkowski, founder and artistic director of the festival. (Barbara Skowrońska)
