The 4th Sinfonietta Festival once again brings together music ensembles from Poland’s former and current capitals: Sinfonietta Cracovia hosts Sinfonia Varsovia for a series of chamber concerts.

During the concert Seconds (21 June, Gallery in Sukiennice), musicians from Sinfonia Varsovia and Sinfonietta Cracovia engage in a duel of Dvořák and Penderecki’s string quintets and duets for cello and double bass. The full line-ups of both orchestras also appear during the finale concert (25 June, Kraków Philharmonic), featuring presentations by the guests under the baton of Jerzy Maksymiuk and the hosts led by Jurek Dybał; the two then join forces for Penderecki’s Emanations and Martinů’s Concerto for two orchestras. We will also find motifs from the capital city in the concert Varsavian Lutosławski: Polish hits from the 1950s and 1960s penned by the composer under the pseudonym Derwid are sung by Magda Navarrete accompanied by Sinfonietta Cracovia (24 June, outdoor concert in front of the Józef Czapski Pavilion).

What else? On 22 June, the Gallery in Sukiennice resounds with the world-famous bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny performing Mahler’s songs. The concert also features old Polish songs and Renaissance dances recalled in Górecki’s Three Pieces in Old Style and the world premiere of the winning work of the composition competition Sinfonietta per Sinfonietta. The following day we’ll explore clubbing intertwined with classical music: on 23 June, the interiors and gardens of the National Museum in Krakow host five stages, five ensembles and sounds from Music Capitals.

Let’s all say yes to exquisite music! (Barbara Skowrońska)
