Hungarian Wonder
Hungarian films have long been at the forefront of Central European cinematography and are the regularly nominated for awards; this is thanks to a generation of highly talented directors whose work speaks volumes to audiences at home and abroad. Let’s find out more during the Hungarian Film Spring (21-26 May) at Pod Baranami Cinema! The review opens with Gábor Herendi’s Kincsem – Bet on Revenge. The film tells the story of the most successful racehorse ever – the titular filly also known as Hungarian Wonder – commemorated in a life-sized statue in Budapest. The programme also includes short and feature-length releases from recent years, including 1945 (dir. Ferenc Török) exploring the persecution of Jews during the Second World War by Nazis and others, The Citizen (dir. Roland Vranik) about an African refugee in Budapest dreaming of obtaining Hungarian citizenship, Manhood (dir. Péter Politzer) showing a day in the life of three men, and the sci-fi thriller Loop (dir. Isti Madarász).
