The centenary of Poland’s independence coincides with the centenary of Polish women gaining the vote, granted by the decree of 28 November 1918 following the intervention of suffragettes with Commander-in-Chief Józef Piłsudski. Women were also given the right to vote and stand for parliament in 1918 Austria and Germany. The project Decision Makers. The Right to Choose, celebrating this triple victory and organised by Nuremberg House and the Goethe-Institut Krakau, brings together over thirty artists from Austria, Germany and Poland. The participants were set the task to contemplate the life choices faced by contemporary women and discuss how they see today’s women’s rights, fought for so hard over a century ago by our grandmothers and great-grandmothers; do women still need to overcome stereotypes and fight for the right to fully participate in many spheres of public life? The project culminates with an exhibition at Nuremberg House and in tenement houses and public spaces in Kazimierz; there are also workshops, meetings and film screenings focusing on various aspects of women’s right to make full decisions in their personal, social and professional lives.
