The 90th Academy Awards ceremony is held on 4 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The night before the most important event for the cinema industry, Agrafka Cinema hosts its very own Oscar Film Night. We will miss out on the jokes spun out by the hosts and the tears shed by the winners, but we will see three excellent films J The programme features the fantasy The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro, winner of three Oscars for Pan’s Labyrinth. The latest film by the visionary director won the Golden Lion in Venice, and it has been nominated for 13 Oscars and seven Golden Globes.
We will also see the dark, dazzling tale of a woman’s quest for justice Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The black comedy by Martin McDonagh, nominated for an Oscar for In Bruges, is nominated for seven Oscars, the audience award at the Camerimage Festival in Bydgoszcz and the prize for best screenplay in Venice.
Loveless by Andrey Zvyagintsev, author of The Return, Elena and Leviathan, is a brutal portrayal of a separated couple’s search for their missing son. The film was awarded the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival and European Film Awards for best cinematographer and best composer.
