Trauma and Revival Imagining Future Pasts / Handling History
In the third part of the Trauma and Revival series, from October to December 2017, we would like to take a closer look at disparate personal takes on political, social, and cultural history and its protagonists. The possibility of trauma in the face of an encounter with the past is addressed in indirect and subtle ways. Every artist offers a stylistically unique and independent alternative to established models of experience, narrative, reflection, and depiction of oneself and others. It is a series of (self-)portraits with trauma lingering in the background and revival always questioned and distorted by fantasy, doubt, and irony. This is not to say that we are going to walk through a dark forest of historical negativity; we are going to explore personal documents and stories, localities and minorities, documents forgotten or covered in thick layers of dust (or other images and stories), ideas and visions which initially seem too insane to even be considered a topic for conversation, and yet are set in motion by artistic activism and bold political imaginations. In addition, we will be looking at how artists weave themselves into past narratives, how they become protagonists in their own right, claiming their proper and unique place in history, even if it means deforming it, queering it, reading it against the grain, or rather setting the grain according to their needs and claims. We will be discussing possibilities of overcoming trauma as a framework for the experience of collectives and individuals, of shifting stress and displacing pain which will not be repressed, coming up with alternative mnemonic regimes, and alternate approaches to the past and the future.
