Jazz Forever!
Each year, the festival reminds us of the outstanding jazzmen who are no longer with us, but the event also shows that music is eternal. The stars of the 62nd Kraków All Souls “Zaduszki” Jazz Festival (3-9 November) are Simon Phillips and Trombone Shorty. Phillips is one of the best percussionists working today, and he is equally at home with rock, fusion and jazz. Best known for his performances with Toto, the Who, David Gilmour, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani, the English drummer performs on 4 November at Studio, accompanied by his group Protocol IV. Trombone Shorty is the alias of Troy Michael Andrews – a young vocalist, trombonist and trumpeter from New Orleans. He performs at ICE Kraków with his energetic band Orleans Avenue. On 8 November you’ll discover his incredible combinations of trad jazz with soul and hip-hop. The concert is held as part of the cycle ICE Jazz.
What else is there? We head to the Wieliczka Salt Mine for the inauguration and to delve into stories told by the outstanding duo of Krzysztof “Puma” Piasecki and Józef Skrzek. The evening also features the project Holographic Principle created by Michał Wierba, leading representative of the young generation of mainstream jazz, and Ronnie Burrage, American percussionist with roots in hard-bop, bebop, funk and soul. There are also plenty of attractions during the finale. NCK hosts the Polish supergroup Laboratorium, with guests including the vocalist Rasm Al-Mashan and the rapper O.S.T.R. The concert closes with a performance by the Polish violinist Adam Bałdych, accompanied on piano by the Norwegian musician and composer Helge Lien. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" magazine)
