Born in Warsaw in 1923, the artist, sculptor and designer of ceramics Lubomir Tomaszewski has spent more than the last five decades living and working in the US. During the 1950s and 1960s, he had close ties with the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw where he created experimental designs for small-scale china sculptures. His concepts of figurines and services were taken up by some of the most important ceramics factories in Poland, including those in Ćmielów, Wałbrzych and Chodzież. The exhibition Lubomir Tomaszewski. Sculptures, Paintings, Design, held at the International Cultural Centre and organised by the Lubomir Tomaszewski Art and Design Foundation, presents works created over several decades, such as ceramics made at the Institute of Industrial Design – including award-winning coffee services “Ina” and “Dorota” – as well as sculptures and paintings. In the latter Tomaszewski uses his own techniques applying fire and smoke. He is also the creator of an international art movement known as emotionalism. The painters, sculptors, graphic designers, photographers and musicians involved with it work towards the concept of “less show, more content”; their nature-inspired works frequently reference human emotions.
