Creating friendly and beautiful urban landscapes is the leading concept behind the International Biennale of Architecture Kraków 2017 (MBA Kraków 2017), with the subtitle “Backyard – Field of Imagination”.
The organisers were inspired by the urban design concept of placemaking – planning, designing and managing public spaces which support creating a neighbourly sense of responsibility for all shared spaces. Participants in the MBA competitions (urban and architectural design, multimedia and a seminar competition for best report, presentation or manifesto) were tasked with rethinking spaces on the boundary of public and private spheres, such as Kraków’s courtyards, street intersections and squares in post-communist housing estates. Presentations by participants, jurors and guests will be held during the two-day conference at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre, accompanied by an exhibition of competition designs (registration required). During the following three weeks, works submitted to the biennale will be exhibited at the former Cracovia Hotel. The programme also features accompanying exhibitions of contemporary architecture at the Krzysztofory Palace, Szczepański Square, Manggha Museum and Forum Przestrzenie. (dd)
