MORE THAN SARDONIC

One of the craziest bands of recent years makes a welcome return to Kraków. Members of the New York Gogol Bordello are dominated by immigrants, many from Eastern Europe. The ethically-diverse musicians are led by Eugene Hütz, who left Ukraine with his family following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Wondering what their music is like? Explosive, of course! But Gogol Bordello is much more than just a Gypsy punk band. Their latest, seventh album Seekers and Finders reveals a more mature side. The lyrics touch upon transcendence (as in the single Saboteur Blues), while the title track features the rather serious songwriter Regina Spektor. “Not everything in art is ironic; you can’t only look at it through a prism of mockery. We play with traditions and genres, but the real meaning of our music delves deeper,” Hütz said in an interview with the New York Times a few years ago. Support comes from a no less exuberant band: the hugely popular Lucky Chops, also from New York. (AJ)
