Just Can’t Get Enough
They first performed in Poland on 30 July 1985 at Warsaw’s Torwar. Although Depeche Mode were founded just five years before, they’d already recorded four albums, each reaching the top ten in their native UK. They had some fans in Poland, but they were yet to reach a cult following, so the organisers recall that the artists wandered round Warsaw’s streets without attracting any attention from the public. According to one anecdote, the musicians got peckish and sampled some local fast food in the city centre. “They were out on their own, eating Polish food, and I was terrified they’d get sick!” recalls Roman Rogowiecki who looked after the group with the concert organisers Pagart. Fortunately the snacks fortified them, and they were on top form – you can even watch the performance on YouTube. The concert reportedly marked the start of Poland’s obsession with the band.
Since then Depeche Mode have sold over 100 million albums and performed for over 30 million fans all over the globe. Their latest, 14th studio album Spirit released last year confirms they still got the blues. On 7 February, they come to Tauron Arena Kraków to show that they are still one of the best live acts around. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" magazine)
