Are humankind’s achievements in science, sports and culture in concert with nature, or do they interfere in the environment in which we live? This timely subject is tackled by the organisers of the 17th Festival of Science and the Arts, selecting as the event’s patron Walery Goetel – the only Polish scientist to be awarded the Van Tienhoven Prize for his work on Europe’s national parks and nature reserves. We will learn how scientists can contribute to environmental protection and work on bringing harmony to the relationship between humankind and the environment between 24 and 27 May. The latest achievements of Kraków’s scientific institutions are presented on stage at the festival village at the Main Market Square. As well as the lecture on environmental protection, the programme features a futsal competition, concert by the Big Band of the Academy of Music in Kraków and a performance by students of the PWST Academy for Theatre Arts.

The Pedagogical University of Kraków, the event’s organiser, hosts the finale at the Church of St Catherine, where Gheorghe Zamfir, virtuoso of panpipes is accompanied by the university’s symphonic orchestra and academic choir. (bf)
