Light Birthday

“More light!” were the unforgettable last words of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The Institute bearing his name and promoting German language and culture around the globe has had a branch in Kraków for 25 years. Following the patron’s final wish, the Goethe-Institut in Kraków commemorates the anniversary with a Light Birthday, culminating on 20 May at the intersection of Bracka Street and the Rynek Główny.

Evening celebrations kick off at 9pm with a performance by the Dundu ensemble – a theatre of majestic puppets spun from glittering threads. The spectacle is followed by a multimedia installation by the Urbanscreen ensemble, projected onto the façade of the Potocki Palace, home of the institute (the display will be repeated on 21 May). Finally, at 10pm the windows of the Goethe-Institut library welcome three DJs, marking the start of a silent disco on the Rynek Główny. The participants will be given glowing headphones picking up three live music channels.

And thus Goethe’s words come true!
