The main motto remains the same: presenting music by composers with ties to our city. The 29th International Festival of Kraków Composers (23-30 April) hosts visitors from Nordic countries of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark, as well as those from Estonia and the Netherlands. The event’s special guest is Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho; she talks about combining nature and science in her music, from concepts of water lilies and the aurora to advanced computer technologies used to synthesise sound. Her Notes on Light resound during the festival opening, performed by the Danish cellist Jakob Kullberg accompanied by the New Music Orchestra under the baton of Szymon Bywalec. The event also hosts the Kroger Quartet from Denmark and the Dutch composer and musicologist Leo Samama with his String Quartet No. 3 penned especially for the festival. The finale features the world premiere of Symphony No. 3 by Maciej Jabłoński – a Cracovian by choice. (Barbara Skowrońska)
