Selected Portraits of Tadeusz Kościuszko from the Collection of the National Museum in Krakow.
“All homes are decorated with his portraits and copper plates. Almost everyone carries his silhouettes in their snuffboxes or rings,” reported Józef Świętorzecki in a letter from 1793. The exhibition Faces of a Hero at the gallery in Sukiennice, organised by the National Museum in Krakow, recalls the cult surrounding Tadeusz Kościuszko – general and commander of the Polish uprising against Russia and Prussia in 1794. The 150 works include images of the Polish hero we all know from history textbooks alongside lesser known likenesses. (dd)
