Has Capella Cracoviensis decided to reveal its dark side, like the respectable Doctor Jekyll who at night turns into the rather less friendly Mister Hyde? Fortunately the idea behind the cycle Alter ego is less diabolic, although it’s also based on strong contrasts. The presentation of the orchestra’s alternative countenance involves juxtaposing works from different eras in a single concert. But this isn’t just to show off the ensemble’s diverse skills – the musicians are equally at home presenting Renaissance polyphony and dodecaphony; it aims to encourage the audience to ask questions about the wealth and variety of music and its universal appeal. This brings us the marriages of Telemann and Szymanowski, Monteverdi and Weber, Albinoni and Pärt, da Palestrina and Schönberg, and the combination of Schütz with Mahler. The five concerts of the Alter ego cycle resound on consecutive Thursdays between 23 February and 23 March at the concert hall at the Franciscan Church; Capella Cracoviensis describes the concerts as “poetic, non-literal, free from historical contexts, universal, communicative, full of emotions. Different for everyone, but certainly for everyone!” (Barbara Skowrońska)

The concers of the Alter ego cycle will be preceded by Wednesday morning presentations of the same programme as part of the latest instalment of the project Matinée: Concerts for Juniors and Seniors.
